Green lasers are everywhere in today's world. After all, every CD player has one. They are cheap to produce. So why do you see green laser pointer selling for $70 and up advertised in astronomy magazines? Well, green, it turns out, is a more complicated color. Viable diodes do not exist at the right wavelength, so the laser beam is "pumped" through a pair of crystals that must be precisely collimated. (There's more to the process, and Wikipedia offers a longer, more boring explanation for those interested, but it's fair to say that collimation complicates everything and adds to the cost.)
