Lasers are divided into different categories:

Class 1: Class 1 lasers are considered safe based on current medical knowledge. This class includes any astronomical laser pointer or laser system that cannot emit optical radiation levels beyond the limits of the eye under any exposure conditions consistent with the design of the laser product. Hazardous lasers may be embedded within the enclosure of a Class 1 product, but no harmful radiation can escape the enclosure.
Class II: These lasers do not cause eye damage under normal conditions, but can cause damage when viewed directly for extended periods of time.
