Raman spectrometers rely on highly focused beams of light at precise wavelengths to illuminate small samples of material. A high-sensitivity detector then studies the spectrum of light re-emitted or scattered from the sample. Most of this scattered light retains its original frequency or color, but a small fraction shifts slightly to a higher or lower wavelength, depending on the specific vibration pattern of the sample in the "study." By comparing the offset wavelength with the original wavelength, the presence of chemicals in the sample can be accurately determined.
