Mass production of blue laser pointers
Blue laser pointers are mass produced, so this helps keep costs down. They usually have less complex and less robust drive electronics, as the power source is supposedly well-defined - a set of batteries. The astigmatism and elliptical aberrations of typical laser diodes may not have correcting optics - at a distance your spot is not a nice circular Gaussian profile. Probably just a cheap plastic lens glued to it, although some models have adjustable focus. Additionally, as the temperature of the laser diode changes (it heats up when energized), so does the current requirement to produce a given light output. In the absence of visual feedback, if the current is set correctly, once the temperature of the laser diode has stabilized, it may burn out immediately on the next cold start!
The same applies to class 2 or class 2m pointers. If you import the device, you must expect customs to still seize it and be sure your local police authority will take care of the matter. While the original green laser pointer only emitted red light, blue, yellow and orange also appeared after green.
